Learning Objective #1: give one example on how to get started on A Nursing Research Project
Learning Objective #2: describe the use of Stetler Model in reviewing literature

Purpose:    To provide nurses with an understanding of how to develop a unit based research project.

Objectives:
1.      Give one example on how to get started on a nursing research project.
2.      Describe the use of Stetler Model in retrieving literature.

Problem:  Nurses are intimidated in doing research due to lack of knowledge on how to get started.

Background:  Historically, most research were initiated or done by physician. Nurses were not trained to be researcher but were known to be good observers, reporters and recorders. Those are the qualifications for good researchers, so nurses possessed all those qualifications already. They do not have to be trained but they just need some guidance and structuring. This presentation will show how to generate interest, brainstorm and how to get started on a unit based nursing research project. It will describe how the Stetler Model is utilized in reviewing literature. Discuss the five phases in the Stetler Model and will give examples. It will also discuss different types of study designs used in nursing research. It will describe the necessary steps on how to start a nursing research project. Finally it will describe a sure way to convince the institution to "buy-in" and implement nursing research into practice.
