Objectives:                 The learner will be able to 1) Identify factors preventing a functioning shared governance council to exist. 2) Discuss facilitators improving staff participation in shared governance councils.

Purpose:                     Nursing faces critical staff shortages and leadership strategies are needed to help create a positive and health work environment (Parson’s et all, 2005). An innovative form of staff leadership is necessary to engage and involve decisions-making in order to promote improved clinical outcomes. The purpose of this study is to determine the facilitators and barriers of shared governance in nursing staff at Covenant Health System.

Shared governance is a system of management and promotion in the empowerment of nurses through a movement away from the traditional hierarchical style of nursing management (Williamson, 2005). Magnet designation suggests shared governance increases staff leadership through the characteristics defining nursing in a magnet facility. The characteristics include quality patient care, clinical autonomy and responsibility, participatory decision-making and strong nurse’s leaders (Blount et al, 2007). Strong nurse manager support, active involvement of the charge nurses at the mid-management level and empowered staff nurses is necessary to develop leadership roles. Magnet designation suggests shared governance increases staff leader ship. The purpose of this study is to determine the facilitators and barriers of shared governance in nursing staff at Covenant Health System. A quantitative descriptive action research study was used utilizing a non-experimental survey. A sample design survey was developed and pilot tested for face validity using 6 nurses’ managers and staff nurse educators. The research question for this study is: What are the facilitators and barriers of shared governance in the nursing staff at Covenant Health System? A convince sample of 30 licensed nursed from 4 units will be surveyed. Staff will be asked to answer questions regarding participation in shared governance councils.
