Strategies to Increase Nursing Workforce Diversity

Learning Objective #1: Discuss at least two strategies for increasing middle school student interest and understanding of nursing as a career choice.
Learning Objective #2: Describe the relationship between faculty cultural competence, mentoring, and success of diverse populations in nursing education.
This symposium is designed to provide outcome data related to three aspects of two federally funded nursing workforce diversity grants. Both grants have focused on development of a more culturally competent health care workforce, improving the cultural sensitivity of health care professionals through changes in the education process, techniques to improve the pre-entry preparation of the nursing applicant pool, and strategies to assure that young people will have a renewed interest in nursing as a career choice as well as the appropriate educational foundation for that pursuit. The presentations will describe both the processes used to achieve the outcomes and the outcomes achieved after the first and second years of the grants.
