The Effectiveness of Relaxation Training on the Self-Management, Quality of Life and Lung Function Among Children with Asthma

Relaxation techniques have been used in several clinical trials and gain some good results. This study was a longitudinal repeat measurements experimental research design. The purposes of this study were under the control of parentsˇ¦ demographic data and childrenˇ¦s disease condition, compare the difference before and after relaxation technique combined self-management, the difference between the relaxation group and control group of moderate to severe asthmatic children in self perceived anxiety, asthma sign/symptoms, pharmacological utilization, lung function, and quality of life. And then random assigned into the experimental group and the control group. After pre-test, the experts in childrenˇ¦s asthma care conducted the self-management program based on six teaching units to these two groups. In this period, 30 minutes relaxation technique conducted the researcher and the biofeedback were used to insure the training effectives in the experimental group. Three months latter, we evaluate the effectiveness. Sixty-three aged 7 to 14 years old children with asthma and their parents recruited in this study. Twenty-nine in the experimental group and thirty-four were in the control group. The measure instruments included self-reported inventory by children and parents, the biofeedback reports for lung function, and the charts for medicine records. All the data coded on Excel of Windows. GLM used to analyze the repeat measurements. The effectiveness of relaxation technique combined self-management of this study were significant time and group interaction effects of lung function (PEFR), pharmacological utilization, asthma sign/symptom, self-management behaviors of parents, quality of life of parents. The anxiety of children was not improvement significantly. The results would be the evidence-based nursing practice for quality asthma care.
