Clinical Partnerships for Teaching Evidence-Based Nursing to Registered Nurse Students

Increasing evidence-based nursing practice in clinical agencies depends on enhancing clinical nurses’ knowledge and skills regarding research utilization. The University of Michigan School of Nursing recently revised its RN Studies curriculum to include a clinical course titled, “Evidence-Based Practice.” The course focuses on utilizing research evidence to develop nursing interventions for selected clinical problems. RN students enroll in Evidence-Based Practice concurrently with a research methods course. In the classroom, students learn how to identify practice problems, search databases for evidence, critique the strength and relevance of evidence for their own setting, and develop outcomes and protocols for clinical practice changes.

Local health care agencies were asked to identify clinical practice problems that they wished to address. For the clinical component of the course, RN students partnered with the agencies’ nursing staff to formulate problem statements, review & synthesize relevant literature, and develop, implement, and evaluate a clinical practice innovation. Examples of projects and beneficial outcomes for the agencies and for the RN students will be described.
