Maureen F. Murray, RN, MS, CNA, Nursing, Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, NY, USA and Jeanne-Marie E. Havener, PhD, RNCS, FNP, IBCLC, Department of Nursing, Hartwick College, Oneonta, NY, USA.

In order to build a nursing research program in a resource-constrained rural context, creative approaches to building capacity and infrastructure must be explored. This is particularly important in a rural setting where there is a relative lack of doctorally prepared nurses, nurse researchers, mentoring, and the cultural learning necessary to overcome barriers to engaging in the conduct of nursing research. The purpose of this presentation is to describe the factors that lead to the successful development of a mutually satisfying partnership for research collaboration between academic and clinical colleagues. Further, to describe the strategies used in building capacity and infrastructure for a nursing research program. Finally, two examples of research projects that have evolved out of this partnership will be presented.
