A Comparison of Self and Others' Perceptions on the Head Nurses' Human Relation

Objectives: The objective of this study was to find out the differences of perceptions of head nurses and their co-worker staff nurses on the head nurses' human relations. Design: The research design was comparative survey. Sample: One general university hospital in Seoul was selected conveniently. Data collections were done from April 1st to May 2nd in 2002. The subjects were 26 head nurses and 375 staff nurses. Variables: The questionnaire was a Relationship Change Scale developed by Lee, H.D. & Moon, S. M. (1979) that has 6 sub categories, communication, trust, intimacy, sensitivity, openness and understanding. Cronbach' a were like these, Relation change scale was .96, communication .86, trust .81, intimacy .94, sensitivity .87, openness .91, and understanding . 92. Methods: The questionnaires were given two times during one month to know the differences and any changes of head nurses' and staff nurses' perceptions on the head nurses' Human Relation. Findings: Within head nurses (self perceptions), there was no significant differences but within staff nurses (other perceptions), there was significant differences about the understanding ( t=-2.19, p=.03) between first and one month late perceptions on the relation change scale. Between head nurses and staff nurses on the first comparison, there were significant differences on the communication (t= 2.13, p=0.04), sensitivity (t= -2.549, p=0.02) and openness (t= -2.31, p=0.02), but one month later there were significant differences on the communication (t= 4.74, p=0.00) and sensitivity (t= -2.30, p=0.03) only. Conclusions: According to the Johari window, it's to be said that the more open area is wide the better human understanding increase. Therefore knowing self-other perceptions on the head nurses' human relation is important for units' management in hospital. Implications: When nursing organizations will hold leadership training for their head nurses, there must be contain the theory and practice of human relationship.
