Special Session: Improving the Psychosocial Care and Mental Health/Coping Outcomes of Critically Ill Children and Parents: Evidence to Guide Practice

Learning Objective #1: Identify predictors of adverse outcomes in critically ill children and their parents
Learning Objective #2: Describe practice implications to improve outcomes in critically ill children and their parents from a synthesis of prior intervention studies, including the COPE program
There has been an increase in the number of children who are requiring intensive care because of advances in pediatric therapeutics and a changing spectrum of pediatric disease. As a result of this stressful event, children and their parents are vulnerable to a multitude of short- and long-term negative emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes, including a higher risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as a higher need for psychiatric treatment than matched hospitalized children who do not require intensive care and their parents. Therefore, there is an urgent need for nurses to implement evidence-based interventions to improve the mental health/coping outcomes in this high-risk population. This symposium will present: (1) an evidence review of predictors of adverse outcomes in critically ill children and their parents, (2) a synthesis of prior intervention studies to enhance outcomes in critically ill children and their parents; (3) the effects of a theoretically-driven reproducible educational-behavioral intervention, COPE, on the mental health/coping outcomes of young critically ill/hospitalized children and their parents, and (4) the processes through which the COPE intervention exerts its effects. Emphasis will be placed upon translating this evidence into clinical practice to improve the psychosocial care and outcomes of critically ill children and their families.
