Learning Objective 1: Identify the Nursing Leaderships skills needed for the 21st Century and the implications for healthcare organizations
Learning Objective 2: Utilize the knowledge to identify leadership gaps and integrate recommendations in developmental plan
The research is designed to determine how nursing leaders perceive their level of preparation as leaders. The literature suggests that there is a nursing leadership crisis in healthcare and nursing needs an abundance of leaders who have the curiosity, imagination, tenacity and innovative thinking to move the profession confidently into the 21st Century (Antrobus, 1998). Many nursing leaders were trained in the areas of clinical competence and quality but not in finance, budgeting and information systems management. In order for healthcare organizations to achieve their goals, the nursing leader must possess the skills, vision and ability to translate the vision into reality.
This presentation/study will discuss the implications for how nurse leadership development could be improved by attempting to explore how current nursing leaders perceive their level of preparedness. The presentation/study included a literature review, completion of a survey by nursing leaders and some focused interviews. The survey data was entered in a database and analyzed, based on the hypotheses. Several methods of analysis were used involving, correlation, t-tests and scatter graphs.
The results of the study indicate that there is still a leadership gap but it may not be as significant as it was ten years ago. Formal education and organizational support were the two most significant areas that resulted in the perceived preparation of nursing leaders. The study supports the fact that leadership skills development is still very much indicated among all nursing leaders even those who have been leaders for significant periods of time and with different educational preparation.
