Learning Objective 1: describe the characteristics needed to create a future 'great nurse' leader.
Learning Objective 2: evaluate the impact and utility of an innovative project to assist learners with envisioning the future of nursing leadership
To that end, a group of pre-licensure nursing students were asked to review an article and an Internet site that outlines some of the current perceptions of what makes a great nurse. They were then asked to think beyond the real into the ideal and imagine for themselves, what attributes would constitute a great nurse. They were asked to use the Top Ten Rubric in presenting their reflections. The only restriction to the assignment was that they could not use any of the characteristics, attributes or elements already described in their readings.; their great nurse had to be unique, distinctive and exclusively…theirs. Further, they not only had to identify these exceptional qualities, they had to develop a definition of each of the identified characteristics.
This presentation will further outline the overall assignment, the analysis of the great nurse attributes as identified and described by the students, and share student frustrations, challenges, triumphs and insights created from the assignment. A highly descriptive picture of the talents, skills, affect and abilities of future nurse leaders is the result of this innovative project.
