Learning Objective 1: describe challenges clinicians at the point of care face when looking for an answer to a genetics question.

Learning Objective 2: identify the resource that was found to be the most complete and accurate

Purpose:  Determine the accuracy and efficiency of online point-of-care resources to help non-geneticists answer clinical questions about five common genetic conditions.

Methods:  Correct answers were first established by literature review, and scoring criteria were established.  Nine commonly used online resources were selected for review. Main outcome measures were number of answers found, accuracy, and completeness of answers. Efficiency (time per answer found) was reviewed but it was a secondary measure.

Results:  Overall, complete answers were found 33.3% of the time but equally frequently (33.9%) they contained no information.  The best database provided complete answers 70% of the time, while the worst contained none, and 5 of 7 subscription databases contained incorrect information.  Search time ranged from 3.2 minutes to 18.3 minutes per complete answer

Conclusions:  No current online resource is accessible, accurate, and efficient enough to answer point of care genetic questions.
