Background

Obesity has become a major public health problem throughout the world, as it is associated with increased risk for hypertension, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers. A recent study predicts that if recent trends in adult obesity continue, about one third of all adults (almost 13 million individuals) would be obese by 2012.

Purpose

The purpose of this review is to discuss some of the psychological and sociocultural factors that play an important role in causing obesity.

Method

The systematic review of the literature of last seven years i.e. from 2002 to 2008 was done that included both, research and literature review articles.

Finding

The findings from the review revealed that increased levels of stress, depression and Binge eating are some of the psychological factors that lead to obesity. Many sociocultural factors also contribute to a great extent which include considering obesity as being prestigious and as a sign of affluence in certain cultures, specifically in the underdeveloped countries where availability of food is less. Other significant sociocultural factors include high education and economic status, home-oriented cultural values, high consumption of fast food and societal values that do not allow women to step out of their houses.

Conclusion and Recommendation


Health issue of obesity needs to be addressed, as it has been causing significant consequences in the long term. A nurse could play a significant role by educating people regarding prevention of obesity, by suggesting prevention strategies like ways to prevent from stress, depression, increasing level of activity and preventing a sedentary life style.
