Based on the extensive health care needs of Pakistani population, the notion of Community Health Nursing (CHN) was introduced in 1985. The educational nursing institutes adopted nursing curriculum to produce competent Community Health Nurses (CHNs) for meeting the rising demands of Pakistan; however, a very few number of nurses opt to choose CHN as their career pathway. Based on the current observation, instilling motivation among graduate nurses has always been viewed as a great challenge for the academic nursing institutions. Objective:
The objectives of this project were to explore motivating and de motivating factors in nurses; as well as, to explore challenges and seek realistic recommendations by the participants that could foster motivation among CHNs. Method:
Qualitative exploratory design was utilized for this project. Altogether, 24 nursing professionals were selected via purposive sampling. Based on self concept model of motivation, individual in-depth interviews were conducted with CHN faculty members and graduates by utilizing semi-structure interview guide; whereas focus group discussion was conducted among the students. Findings:
The findings revealed that certain traits, values and competencies are required to motivate nurses; as well as, to build their capacity towards working effectively in the community setting. Moreover, through this project several realistic recommendations by the participants are highlighted that could foster motivation among future nurses towards CHN. Conclusion:
Educational infrastructure should be built in such a way that could groom CHNs professionally to make them adaptable to the diverse need of communities. Competency Based Curriculum approach should be utilized and defined traits, values and competencies should be considered.
