Learning Objective 1: define social media
Learning Objective 2: understand how social can be used to promote nursing leadership
Social media is a shift from passive observance on the web to active participation that empowers individuals. Just as nursing is transitioning from top-down models of transactional leadership, the semantic web is increasingly allowing individuals to contribute, collaborate, and affect content and offers great potential for the new wave of transformational leaders. The social media landscape is constantly growing and is being used by participants from numerous backgrounds, lifestyles, and professions. Currently, there is a significant absence of participation from healthcare professions; noticing this absence, a student-led initiative to create a web-based resource to connect nursing students with leaders, researchers and innovators in healthcare was started. The website was focused on knowledge translation around topics strongly related to nursing leadership, healthcare, and was used to encourage engagement of students in relevant research and discussion.
A variety of online services and applications, including: content management systems, document sharing, video repositories, micro-blogging, and networking tools, were utilized to work towards the objectives. Data were gathered using analytical functions that were built in as a proxy, and feedback was gathered from participants across the different platforms.
Using innovative technologies is essential for any profession to keep pace with the changing demands of leadership, professional knowledge transfer, and public engagement. The evolving social media tools need to be considered and adapted by nursing to reach desired outcomes. This presentation will explain how social media can be used in nursing, cover a list of social media tools, expand on their possible use, and challenge the audience to consider how they might use social media. Social media has great value in its potential for use within nursing, and furthermore, the added value of increasing the external visibility of the profession.
