ABSTRACT
     There is a large body of research that has been conducted on various factors that affect job satisfaction of nurses. There are certain factors that contribute to job satisfaction of nurses and promote retention. This research project contributed to the existing body of knowledge by examining what are the factors within the nurses work environment that influence job satisfaction. The purpose of this research study was to examine factors within the nurses work environment that influence job satisfaction. Autonomy, organizational support, work relationships, and professional development were the factors examined in this study. The research question of this study was; what factors within the nurses work environment influence their job satisfaction?  
     A descriptive correlational design was used for this study. A modified version of the Nursing Work Index –Revised (NWI-R) (see Appendix B) was the instrument used to collect data. The participants completed the survey by using SurveyMonkey.com which is an electronic survey tool used to collect and compile data.  The study was conducted at a 368 bed, hospital in the Southeastern United States on acute care units excluding intensive care units (ICU), the emergency department (ER), operating room (OR), labor and delivery, ante partum, and post acute care units (PACU). It included fourteen Registered nurses (RNs) in various roles within the hospital.
     Results of the study revealed that autonomy in relation to professional development and control over practice influenced job satisfaction the greatest. It was noted in the study that the majority of participants were over the age of thirty and worked greater than five years within the organization.
