Description/Overview: As fellow instructors know, when students arrive to school unprepared, late, or in violation of the school dress code they either receive an unsatisfactory for the day or they’re sent home. What happens when an instructor fails to follow a school rule? Well, it happened to me in the fall of 2004… I was caught wearing my class ring. Of course, I wasn’t going home and how do I receive an unsatisfactory? So I looked at my students and said, “When’s my essay due?” That night, I sat there tapping my finger and wondering about what to write when I happened to see a Dr. Seuss book my child left out. “Perfect” I thought, "I’ll write a poetic, funny and educational essay." Attached you will find the essay I wrote for my students. It was such a hit that I decided students could trade in their unsatisfactory for the day if they developed a creative project showing why we need to follow school rules. In the last 5 years, I have collected stories, poems, art, and imprinted into my brain songs and dance. Since then, some of my colleagues have incorporated similar ideas into their class contracts. It’s just a small reminder that every now and then we all break rules, but we all need to be accountable….mother goose too!
