- Hands of Nursing abstract STT.doc (23.5KB) - Attachment(s)
Description/Overview: Nurses use their hands in many ways: to collect, to communicate and to comfort. But how do nursing students view the use of nurse’s hands? During a senior level community health nursing course, students were asked to describe the use of a nurse’s hands. As this list was reviewed, it became apparent the student descriptions were related to skill and technology and not about comfort and care. Examples included tasks such as administering medications, documenting, obtaining specimens and giving baths. To the seasoned nurse, this list was missing something. It lacked the basic aspect of human touch. This poster is an attempt to increase awareness regarding the importance of human touch within the field of nursing through photography and poetry.
Learner Objective #1: Verbalize two ways that nurse's hands demonstrate caring and comfort.
Learner Objective #2: Compare and contrast the use of technical touch versus compassionate touch.
