B 10 SPECIAL SESSION: International Service Learning Task Force Report

Sunday, November 1, 2009: 11:00 AM-12:15 PM
Description/Overview: Members of STTI's International Service Learning Task Force will present their research on the topic of global service learning and will present a model for incorporating a comprehensive database for international service and learning opportunities. Task force members (representing six countries) conducted an extensive review of the literature from around the globe surrounding service learning within nursing. Presenters will provide an overview of this work and will present their ideas on an inclusive definition of service learning as it applies to nursing. Nurses interested in global opportunities in the areas of service, learning and exchange will be interested in the proposed database of international service learning opportunities for nurses. This web-based model will provide linkages for nurses across the globe with programs focusing on areas such as: volunteer service; educational programs; exchange opportunities; international conferences; and will provide opportunity for web-based dialogue within the international nursing community. The ability to log on to a website through STTI, input information related to one's international interests and be presented with a list of program options will make STTI the conduit for international partnerships in the area of service learning. Nurse leaders with service learning experience will share their stories with the group. A Q & A session at the end of the presentation will afford attendees the opportunity to delve further into the exciting work of the ISL Task Force.
