Description/Overview: A shortage of nurse educators is causing nursing programs to turn away qualified students at a time when the nation is facing a potentially dangerous nursing shortage. Those shortages are expected to worsen in the coming years, as more nurse educators retire and too few nurses graduate with the advanced degrees needed to teach. In order to prepare enough nurses for the future, Nurses for a Healthier Tomorrow (NHT), a coalition of nursing and health care organizations, is waging a communications campaign, "Nursing Education . . .Pass It On," to increase the number of nurse educators. This session will define the role of a nurse educator, aspects and opportunities related to a career in nursing education, and the background needed to become a nurse educator. Ways in which nursing management can address the shortage of nurse educators and develop unique arrangements that allow nurse leaders in practice settings to develop educator roles will be discussed.
Learner Objective #1: Define the role of a nurse educator, aspects and opportunities related to a career in nursing education and the background needed.
Learner Objective #2: ways in which nursing management can develop unique arrangements that allow nurse leaders in the practice setting to develop educator roles.
