Learning Objective 1: Discuss strategies and teaching tools to introduce global health concepts to undergraduate nursing students
Learning Objective 2: Discuss global health course content to increase cultural awareness and promote culturally sensitive care in undergraduate nursing students
Using wiki tool technology, undergraduate faculty developed a distance learning course to promote the delivery of global health content to geographically bound nursing students. The course allowed students to “travel” to other countries via the internet to explore other cultures. To examine global health concepts such as environmental factors affecting health, students were given the freedom to select a country of personal interest to present. Students then developed an individual wiki page or “wikicountry” addressing each required global health topic with specific information for their country of interest.
“For visual appeal, students included pictures, maps and tables to illustrate their wiki page and to aid in communicating ideas and information related to their country. This format allowed students to connect broad global health concepts to specific geographic settings and cultures. Each wiki page contains content related to health determinants and health delivery systems, as well as communicable and noncommunicable diseases for the specific country of interest. Throughout the course, students explored cultural, occupational, environmental and nutritional factors related to health” (Hawkins & Campbell, 2010).
