M. Patricia B. Quigley, RN, BSN, MNEd, PhD

Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to discuss an educational partnership between nurses in US and Romania to effect positive changes in palliative care practices.

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to discuss the impact that regional initiatives have on global health by supporting palliative care education for Romanian nurses.

This presentation will showcase how working together locally can produce improved health on a global level. In 2002 the New England Alliance was formed between faculty at Simmons College and the University of Rhode Island. The mission of this partnership is to provide and fund educational activities for nurses associated with Hospices of Hope in Romania. These activities include funding registration fees for conferences, books, and presentations on palliative care issues. Because it is important to disseminate the work that is being done locally to contribute to global health, Delta Upsilon chapter of STTI invited Professor Gerzevitz to present this collaborative project to the membership.  Delta Upsilon provided some funding to support Romanian nurses’ attendance at the International European Conference on Palliative Care during June 2011. Faculty from the University of Rhode Island and Simmons College who are part of the membership of STTI are presenters at this conference.
