CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK: The conceptual framework included 25 attributes of nursing students as the independent variables, and the quality of learning behaviors of nursing students in nursing skills laboratories as the dependent variable. The 25 attributes were selected on the basis of a literature review of nursing skills laboratories.
METHODS: Participants completed the Students’ Attributes Questionnaire (SAQ) and the Self-Evaluation Scale of Learning Behaviors in Nursing Skills Laboratories (LBNSL). The SAQ was used to examine the 25 attributes of nursing students, and content validity was assessed by a pilot study and a panel of experts. The LBNSL was developed to measure the quality of learning behaviors of nursing students in nursing skills laboratories. It contains 36 items grouped into 9 subscales with 4 items each, and has well-established reliability and validity (Miyashiba, 2010). The instrument packets were distributed to 3,844 nursing students sampled from baccalaureate, associate, and diploma programs in Japan. The answers were returned by mail and analyzed statistically.
FINDINGS & DISCUSSION: Seven hundred and twenty-four (18.8%) nursing students responded, and 712 valid responses were analyzed. The results revealed that 15 of the 25 attributes related to the quality of learning behaviors of nursing students in nursing skills laboratories (p < 0.01). These attributes were type of nursing program, understanding of the objectives and methods of the class, support from the faculty, training environment, relationship among students, reason for career choice, etc. The results suggested that clearly sharing the objectives and methods of the class with students, increasing students’ intrinsic motivation, and creating an environment conductive to autonomous learning were important to enhance the quality of learning activities.
