Learning Objective 2: Describe components of a journal recycling program to promote nurses reading and understanding of evidence based practice and research
Evidence based practice and research are essential components of nursing practice. Yet integration can be challenging as the emphasis of care in the clinical setting is focused on providing patient care. In addition, not all clinical nurses have access to evidence based practice and research journals. The JOURNEY project – JOURNal REcYcling Project– was developed to promote dissemination of evidence based practice and research at a Midwestern university affiliated Magnet designated medical center. This unique project promotes recycling of clinical and research journals by faculty in the college of nursing and professional nursing staff within the medical center and distribution of the journals to the clinical nursing unit break rooms. The journal are labeled “For your reading pleasure, from the Center for Clinical Research and Scholarship” to identify that they are being donated to the clinical nursing staff for their review. The project has helped to promote clinical nurse’s reading and understanding of evidence based practice and research as evidenced in journal club discussions and ongoing feedback to members of the professional nursing staff evidence based practice and research committee. This session will describe the components of the project and identify strategies that were used to successfully promote access to evidence based practice and research within the work environment for clinical nursing staff.
