Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to identify the benefits and challenges related to using online videos from media file sharing sites as an instructional strategy.

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to describe ways to integrate online videos into a course or learning activity.

No longer confined as a social networking or entertainment venue, video sharing sites have gone mainstream as computer users can easily upload, share, or view video clips.  Consumer groups, advertisers, and other industries around the world have embraced this multimedia strategy to easily disseminate information in a popular and recognizable format.  However, use of this technology within educational settings has been somewhat limited.

Nurse educators are in the initial stages of understanding how video file sharing sites can be used as a viable instructional strategy.  This presentation will demonstrate how video sharing sites can be used to enhance learning in either the academic or service sectors.  Sites such as YouTube®, One True Media®, or NurseTV®, can be valuable educational resources as the videos available cover a wide range of topics, many of which are pertinent to nursing.  Benefits and challenges related to the integration of this multimedia technology as a learning strategy will be shared.  Selection of relevant videos can be integrated in both clinical and theory related courses as well as staff development events.  Videos can assigned to for viewing prior to class as a homework assignment or shown as part of the scheduled activities.

Evidence indicates that the use of videos from video sharing sites can enrich the teaching/learning experience for educators and learners.  Learners tend to be more engaged in the learning process as the promotion of reflective thinking is combined with the application of principles and concepts to real life nursing practice.
