Learning Objective 1: Describe the usefulness of the Health Belief Model as a strategy for planning patient education

Learning Objective 2: Apply the six components of the Health Belief Model to an individual or community education presentation

The six components of the Health Belief Model (HBM) serve the Nurse Educator as a philosophy for understanding what motivates patients to make health decisions. By utilizing these components as a guide, an educational program can be created that would engage the patient in a systematic approach to aid in decision making regarding a particular health issue or health care decision. Incorporating the components of the HBM will enable the Nurse Educator to provide appropriate education and support to guide the patient through the decision-making process. The HBM can serve as a template for the educator to organize his/her thoughts in creating an effective educational presentation while keeping the focus on the patient. If the patient values the education, that patient will be able to benefit from the educational presentation or program. This will facilitate the patient in accepting or adopting behavior changes that have been suggested to him or her by the health professional or educator.
