Learning Objective 1: Utilize the information presented to consider collaborative/partnership opportunities.
Learning Objective 2: Develop a plan for enhancing collaboration between universities and health service providers.
Collaborative partnerships between academics and health service providers are the foundation towards bridging the overall education and practice gaps within the nursing discipline. For years, healthcare agencies and academic institutions have engaged in contractual agreements which often serve as an earnest commitment towards educating future nurses. However, contractual agreements often favor the needs of the academic institution, leaving minimal effort from academic faculty to improve or enrich healthcare facilities directly. The purpose of this session is to share innovative and transformational ideas created from partnership with a healthcare system in the metro-Atlanta area. Creative and useful strategies will reveal suggestions for innovation, such as the development of a bio-design team composed of members from nursing, engineering, medicine and business, and the development of a transition team which focuses on enhancing newly licensed nurses with their immersion into practice as a registered nurse. A model of collaboration involving nursing, medicine, pharmacy, business, and engineering provides a culture which can lead to: opportunities for increase in scholarly productivity; multidisciplinary approaches to problem solving; and an increased awareness of how academe and health care providers function in today’s society. Ultimately, partnerships lead to an increased opportunity to work collaboratively in research, enhance care delivery, increase safety awareness, and appreciate how both practice and academe need to work together to enhance success in professional growth and advancement.
