The Impact of Using Aromatherapy for ICU Patients

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to sharing a research result of the impact of using aromatherapy in ICU patirnts care.

I. Background

Maintain the quality palliative care in the intensive care unit (ICU) is a common goal, but most ICU patients are still experiencing a lot of discomfort and other unexpected conditions. In ICU, family only can visit in short time, and the complex feelings are often induce a potential tension between families and the medical team. Aromatherapy, from the evidences in clinical therapy which effectively helping release the physical and psychological discomfort. In intensive care combine with palliative care discussions with emphasis on trends, we want to measurement the impact of aromatherapy use for patients care in the intensive care unit.

II. Purpose

1. The impact of physical problem release, for edema, and constipation.

2. The impact of psychological symptom improved, for anxiety.

III. Present situation

The research setting of MICU and CCU, total 50 beds. The patients' diagnosis includes respiration failure, sepsis, and cardiogenic shock in the most of part.

IV. Design

Criteria:(1)20 years of age (inclusive) or more. (2)admission to intensive care unit with 24 hours. (3)Merge the set physical or psychological symptoms. (4) patient self/ family(if patient was coma) clearly understand the research purpose and consented.

The patients randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Experimental group in addition to the formal medical treatment, and aromatherapy. Control group activities in general and purely medical treatment. Researchers followed and recorded once a day. The period is one week, then confirming that the symptom changes and finished the aromatherapy use and observation.

VI. Conclusion

The result determined the impact of aromatherapy use in ICU patients, can effectively improved physical and psychological problems, especially for the extremities edema(p< 0.05), and anxiety(p< 0.05), the most important point is patients' family can join the process, can effectively to improved the powerlessness ,fear, and distrust.
