Communication Strategy for Multidisciplinary Non-Emergent Organizational Change

Learning Objective 1: To identify a cost effective communication tool for nurses regarding practice & organizational change.

Learning Objective 2: To identify a means to consistently communicate non-emergent multidepartmental patient care improvements to nurses.

Purpose: To organize and consistently communicate non-emergent organizational change monthly via an intranet WordPress BLOG.

Methodology: An intranet Web site, “First Tuesday” is designed to communicate organizational change, 24/7, consistently within the nursing department (Patient Care Services, PCS, with a 2070+ member workforce).  Notices of non-emergent change are posted on the intranet site on the first Tuesday of every month.  The rest of the month essentially remains unchanged with the exception of emergent issues determined by upper management personnel.  

Over 320 change notices, performance improvement, mandates, items of interest have been posted in the first 18 months of operation.  Notices go out on the first Tuesday of the month on an intranet Web page while being simultaneously educated by managers.  The website is now multidisciplinary. Staff knows where to look for information regarding the latest changes.  Memos are categorized (categories will be provided), cross-referenced, as well as a monthly archive.  First Tuesday staff can easily maintain the web site requiring approximately 10 hours/month or less.

Findings:  Multidisciplinary communication consistency throughout PCS and a cross referenced, archived depository of information now exists.  The results of a staff satisfaction survey with > 91% approval rating, and anecdotal comments will be shared.  Faculty from schools of nursing find First Tuesday a valued resource to them. 

Summary concluding statement:  First Tuesday BLOG is a low cost communication method for multidisciplinary and multi-department change within a large organization.
