Experience of Nurses Regarding the Use of eHealth in Remote Parts of Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan

Background: eHealth characterizes a way of thinking, and a commitment for networked, global approach, to improve health care by using Information and Communication Technology. Health professionals including nurses in rural primary care could gain more from eHealth initiatives, yet little is known about eHealth in geographically isolated areas, such as northern areas of Pakistan. Therefore, a study was conducted to explore the experiences of nurses regarding eHealth.

Objective: To elicit current use, and attitudes of nurses towards eHealth in primary care in remote areas of Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan.

Methodology: The study utilized qualitative, case-study approach, where health centers of Gilgit Baltistan area of Pakistan were taken as a single case to look at nurses’ perspective about eHealth, and its impact on their professional life. In-depth interviews were carried out, using semi structured interview guide with 10 nurses, who were selected who were using eHealth (mainly Telemedicine) regularly. Each interview was transcribed and verified. Qualitative content analysis was done using NVIVO software. Study approval was taken from Aga Khan University ERC.

Findings: The study findings revealed seven major categories regarding the eHealth experiences of nurses, which includes: problems faced by nurses in providing routine care in remote area; role of eHealth in solving problems; technological experience; benefits of eHealth; challenges related to eHealth; community’s perception about eHealth; and recommendations by participants.

Conclusion: With the introduction of eHealth, community verbalized their satisfaction in terms of enhanced accessibility and quality care with reasonable cost. Moreover nurses perceived eHealth as a solution to reduce their professional isolation as they are exposed to new knowledge through Teleconsultations and eLearning.
