Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to analyze and integrate core elements of a culture of safety with tools that develop bedside leadership skills
Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to discuss accountability, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork and methods for using these elements to develop bedside leadership skills.
Methods: A set of assessments and interventions for the development of skills in accountability, critical thinking, communication and teamwork were identified and placed on 4x6 cards that formed a toolkit of activities that could be used by leaders to develop staff. The toolkit was piloted on six units, including the ED, an ICU, an OR, a procedure area, and two acute care units. The units identified areas of concern, used the assessment tools to drill down to determine core issues, implemented a variety of interventions, including communication training and critical thinking tools from the Advisory Board “Critical Thinking Toolkit”, and evaluated effectiveness with a pre-post survey taken from questions on the NDNQI RN Satisfaction Survey.
Results: From anecdotal reports and the results of the surveys, the pilot indicated improvement in all four areas. The pilot was concluded before definitive results could be determined based on quantitative scores from the nursing dashboards.
Conclusions: The in depth assessment of potential problems with staff skills was the most effective part of the toolkit. The directors and managers from each pilot unit indicated that the assessment tools helped them identify areas in need of follow-up that they would not have been aware of without the use of the toolkit. The interventions in the toolkit are simple and a first step in the development of individual accountability, sound critical thinking, effective communication, and strong teamwork.
At the conclusion of the pilot study recommendations were made for full implementation of the toolkit and the integration of the toolkit concepts of accountability, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork into an interdisciplinary safety curriculum.
