Learning Objective 1: Describe common barriers to nursing research.
Learning Objective 2: Discuss strategies for implementing a successful program of research.
Methods: A review of the literature was conducted using the PubMed and CINAHL databases to identify publications related to leadership, collaboration, communication, research barriers, and developing a research program.
Results: Relevant publications were used to identify successful methods for improving interdisciplinary collaboration. Leadership techniques were employed to engage interdisciplinary members involved in the research study. New plans were developed to improve communication among the research team and nurses involved with the patients. Strategies were implemented to improve patient recruitment. Technology was used to notify team members of participant status and other updates related to the research study. After implementing several leadership strategies collaboration among the research team improved, and recruitment of patients increased.
Conclusions: The leadership strategies were successful for developing a program of research and improving interdisciplinary collaboration. Nurse leaders must provide innovative solutions to numerous problems from a variety of settings, and developing successful research programs are essential to the profession and to advance nursing science. These strategies will assist the novice researcher by sharing knowledge in the global nursing community.
