Learning Objective 1: To realize how to creat a supportive-expressive group

Learning Objective 2: To understand the outcomes of group therapy

The purpose of our research is to evaluate the effect of gynecologic cancer supportive group on the anxiety of gynecologic patients. The participants were gynecologic patients who attended the support group. The support group was carried out 60-120 minutes once a week on Wednesday. The host of the support group was senior head nurse who worked in department of psychiatry. The deputy and recorder were selected from the research team. The research was started from September 23th, 2009 and collected the data from 21 patients. The results showed that the mean of anxiety scores was 86.4±18.9, ranged from 52-118. The scores were higher than general persons. However, the qualitative analysis indicated that the patients would have the symptoms of impact, anxiety and mental and physical disorder in the beginning of illness. After the solutions and living adjustment experience about the illness sharing with other patients, the patients could find the mental and physical balance methods and supported each other. Even the patients discussed how to face death. Furthermore, the support group was open group. One patient accepted five times chemotherapy after the encouragement from other patients. Another patient shared her experience in the support group each time she was hospitalized after joining support group once. Moreover, the support group actively visited the deeper anxiety patients who were reluctant to join the support group.  The establishment of the supportive group has served many patients. If different cancer could establish more support groups, it will serve much more patients.
