Learning Objective 1: understand the expectations and needs of STTI members in Europe
Learning Objective 2: have a greater awareness of the issues facing STTI members in Europe
Purpose: To explore European members’ expectations of STTI and the factors which sustain their membership within STTI.
Methods: Data for a pilot study were collected by interviews, focus groups or email with a purposive sample of active members from the European Honor Societies (n=32) & inactive members from the European chapters (n=6). The pilot study identified issues which sustained European nurses’ membership or the reasons why they had not renewed their membership. This information was then analysed thematically to inform the development of a questionnaire to be distributed to all active members in Europe (n=359) and inactive members whose membership has lapsed by one year (n=71). The total sample size for the online survey is 430.
Results: The online survey will be completed by March and the data analysed by the summer of 2011. The findings from the pilot study indicated that members were not always aware of or in receipt of benefits and therefore questioned whether their membership provided value for money. There was also a need identified for the organisation to reflect a more European approach.
Conclusion: This European survey will provide insightful data to inform future strategies to aid member recruitment and retention in Europe in order to develop a sustainable European region within STTI, based on the needs and expectations of European nurses.
