Learning Objective 1: Identify what is considered in the literature to be the "gold standard" assessment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and why.
Learning Objective 2: Describe an evidence based cognitive behavioral therapy for survivors of PTSD.
Purpose: To assess the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression among Haitian nurses at the International Child Care-Haiti, Inc., and the faculty and students at the National Haitian School of Nursing to determine their social and occupational functioning and to enhance theri resilience through an evidence-based treatment. Using the subject's scores on two assessments, a classroom-based cognitive behavioral intervention will be designed for use by the Haitian Directors of Nurses at both facilities to provide the subjects with coping skills that enhance resiliency. The two instruments are 1) the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) is a 30 item assessment that evaluates the frequency and intensity of each traumatic symptom in the last month and the impact of these symptoms on the individual's social and occupational functioning, and 2) the Beck Depression Inventory, a 21 question multiple choice survey used to measure the severity of major depressive disorder. Authors will use interpreters and translated training manuals and instruments to train Haitian professionals to administer these assessments. The authors will collaboratively analyze the results with the Directors of Nurses at both facilities in order to identify universal and culturally specific symptoms. The intervention is a Prolonged Exposure therapy acknowledged as an evidence-based treatment of PTSD by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
