Learning Objective 1: Describe a collaborative partnership model which increases nursing students' knowledge about urban and rural community health nursing in the Philippines and Philippine culture.

Learning Objective 2: Identify partnerships with Philippine nursing faculty, students and community leaders which promote advancement of nursing education on health problems, disease prevention and health promotion.

A nursing education goal is exposure of nursing students to global health opportunities. This presentation describes a collaborative partnership model between two universities which focused on educating 15 nursing students about urban and rural community health nursing in the Philippines and Philippine culture.  Objectives for the experience were: 1) explore community health nursing in urban and rural settings; 2) explore Philippine cultural experiences.  Faculty collaborated with University of the Philippines to identify learning experiences which addressed objectives. Students met with faculty about Philippine culture/educational opportunities. Students completed formal evaluations of experiences.

Findings: Students reported experiences met objectives. Urban setting activities included: College of Nursing orientation; Chancellor/faculty meeting on nursing curriculum/health problems in the Philippines; hospital tour; Health Officer meeting on urban health problems/interventions; mayor meeting on community needs; Nutrition Program visit.  Rural activities included:  health clinic tour; Rural Health Unit/client home visits; health fair for children. Objective 2 was met through: community leader meetings on culture, health care delivery system; historic tour of Manila; shopping for ethnic foods/visiting Balut market to buy cooked duck embryos; climbing Taal volcano.  Students completed an independent study or obtained hours toward community health clinical. Projects focused on tuberculosis, malaria, dengue fever, malnutrition and prevention/management strategies. Projects will be presented at a global healthcare symposium.  Student benefits: increased knowledge about health problems including poor nutrition, smoking, tuberculosis, malaria, dengue fever, ascaris  worms,  environmental pollution; understanding Philippine culture,  health care delivery system, nurses roles in promoting health/preventing disease.  Faculty/students shared nursing knowledge with Philippine nurses/students.  Conclusions: Collaborative Partnership Model contributed to students’ understanding of community health problems, disease prevention/health promotion strategies. Findings have implications for development of successful global collaborative partnerships and implementation /evaluation of Philippines study abroad experiences for nursing students. The experience promoted advancement of education of nursing students in a global setting.
