Learning Objective 1: Depict how a hospital based nursing strategic plan can be customized to a unit level with definable unit goals

Learning Objective 2: Express the correlation between the empowerment of floor based nurses and the achievement of hospital based nursing strategic goals

As a part of a large multi facility organizational system, our challenge was to take large organizational destination metrics/core strategies and customize them to both an overall hospital nursing strategic plan as well as a unit based nursing strategic plan that nurses could embrace. A nursing leadership retreat was held in which hospital nursing goals were identified and categorized into one of the four system core measures: people, growth, stewardship, and quality. After the establishment of unified hospital goals, the strategic plans were customized to the unit level by unit based nursing leadership councils. To disseminate this information and to provide a benchmark for additional units, a different unit based strategic plan was shared at the monthly shared nursing leadership forums. These plans included the hospital mission for nursing, the nursing philosophy, and the professional practice model. After the year long process of creating the unit strategic plan, the challenge was to keep the goals as the focal point for nurses and to evaluate the progress towards the desired outcomes. Individual unit leadership which included directors, clinical nurse specialists, educators, and shared nursing leadership councils took this challenge and worked to create action plans for the achievement of these goals as well as evaluate progress towards the final goals. The progress was then shared at the hospital wide shared nursing leadership forums on a monthly basis. This sharing provided accountability, support, and met the stretch goal of staff engagement at the unit level, hospital level, and organizational level.
