Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to identify components of healthy work environment standards for nurses
Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to cite the benefits of initiatives aimed at improving workplace morale for nurses
The importance of promoting a healthy work environment that acknowledges the contributions of nurses and addresses nursing workplace morale are recognized areas of focus for nursing retention and job satisfaction. The American Association of Critical Care Nurses Association Document entitled “Standards for Establishing and Sustaining Healthy Work Environment” provides a framework for a professional environment and healthy work relationships. Rush University Medical Center, a 635 bed Midwestern university affiliated medical center, adopted the six standards as a guiding framework for establishing priorities and goals for the organization for 2009 and 2010. The nursing staff were educated on HWE standards. Committee chairs developed yearly goals to reflecting these standards and foundation funding was received to support several of the subsequent initiatives. Initiatives included: development of a Work Life Committee with annual goals devoted to six standards of HWE document, development of Code of Conduct with education on respectful and collaborative interactions in the workplace, development of meal break guiding principles and toolkit, expansion of peer review procedures to guide meaningful recognition and communication, initiation of a respite room for nursing, floating competency policies sculpted with staffing standard in mind as best practice, moral distress survey and subsequent education, as well as use of such standards in curriculum of nurse residency program. Additionally, a Student PNS Affiliate position was created between PNS Executive and the College of Nursing to recognize the collaborating relationships, share and expose nursing students to the shared governance philosophy and structure, and create a formal mentorship program between nursing students and PNS Leadership. This poster presentation will review essential components of the interventions that were implemented and will highlighting strategies for successful integration of HWE standards and measures to promote nursing workplace morale.
