Abstract
Promoting health should be a universal responsibility of all individuals not just those involved in health care related fields. With this concept in mind the senior nursing class formed an organization with the mission- to promote health through education. While not a unique concept to health professions, the primary focus was to make this an interdisciplinary approach to educating the community. The nursing students developed a mission statement, organizational goals, and then began soliciting other disciplines to join in on the task of promoting health. This was accomplished through a collaborate approach partnering with disciplines of learning communities across the campus all working toward a common goal, improving health through education. The mission statement: We are committed to promoting holistic wellness among diverse communities using multi-faceted approaches to empower individuals and groups toward consciously living a healthy lifestyle. The student organization sought membership from students enrolled in other majors such as: physical fitness, social work, education, athletics, sports medicine etc. The organization developed a web page, including a calendar of events, and health promoting resources. In the end this project offered the student valuable learning opportunities through collaborating across the disciplines to achieve a common goal. They have learned technical skills, along with concepts of teamwork, leadership, and problem solving. This project has moved the constructs of learning well beyond the boundaries of academia into the community.
