Learning Objective #1: Apply principles of Web site design to an instructional strategy used by nursing students to acquire and disseminate health information | |||
Learning Objective #2: Evaluate the usefulness of Web construction and Internet technology in the development of educational materials by students |
Nurses have long been at the forefront of technology use in monitoring and providing care. Today, the ability to use computer technology to obtain and present information is an essential skill in the knowledge work that nurses do. Educators are encouraged to develop curricula in which students become not only computer literate, but also liberated to use computers – freely able to use a wide variety computer applications. This session describes one learning approach that strengthens student use of computers, web design and the Internet.
Students in two courses prepared web sites for presentation in class and on the Internet. Students presented health topics relevant to the course in which they were enrolled. Freshmen in the critical thinking course developed web sites on general topics of concern to society. For juniors in the family course, the web site reflected family issues across the life span.
Once topics were chosen, groups specified issues that each group member would address. Each student was responsible for focusing on an issue through web pages of original work. Students conducted scholarly searches of literature, including Internet sites, to find the appropriate information and images. Individual web pages were created and linked from a Home Page to form the group’s web site. Reference citations for text and images were expected. The site was subsequently uploaded to Internet domain space provided by the college.
Faculty provided guidance on web site construction and supervised the uploading of students’ web work. The instructor provided a self-instructional guide for Microsoft Office Front Page. Web pages were to be creative, informative, and engaging. Groups presented their topics in class by sharing their web site and findings. Course evaluations show that most students learn from this introduction to web design technology and become more confident in their use of the Internet.
