Learning Objective #1: Identify two barriers to using research findings in clinical practice | |||
Learning Objective #2: Identify two facilitators to using research findings in clinical practice |
Purpose: Examine discrepanacies in use of research findings involved with clinical practice.
Literature: Since the inception of nursing research there has been a discrepancy between research completed and the implimentation of findings into clinical practice. Reasons for not using research finding include a lack of knowledge regarding research. Nurses with basic nursing education including scientific methods and the reserach process perceived the items that relate to the nurses' research values and their skills in and awareness of reserach to be barriers to a lesser extent than the nurses without such education (Kajermo, et al, 1998). It is important for nurse leaders to use evidence-based findings from research in clinical practice. Education in scientific methods is key to removing barriers to research utilization. Design: A descriptive comparative pilot study using a convenience sample was used. Graduate nurses enrolled in an advanced nursing research course were asked to participate. Data was collected from fall 2002 to spring 2003. Data Collection and Statistical Analysis: Following approval from the Review Board, the researcher invited students to participate in the study. Participants completed a demographic data sheet and the Barriers and Facilitators to Using Research in Practice Questionnaire by Crane, J., Pelz, D., and Horsley, J. A. (1977). Students will be asked once again, in spring 2003, to complete the same questionnaire. Student grades will not be affected by their participation or non-participation. The results will be reported in aggregate. A paired t-test will be used to answer the research question. Is their a difference in the preception of barriers and facilitators to using research findings in clinical practcice in graduate nursing student at the beginning and at the completion of a nursing research course? Completed study results will be available in May 2003.
