The Development of a Nutrition Education Program for Toddlers

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a nutrition education program for toddler. This program was developed to teach about adequate nutrition intake and healthy eating habits for toddler, mothers, and teachers using an educational material at home and in the community.

Method: Based on the Dick and Carey model of systematic instructional design (1996), 6 phases of study were performed to develop this nutrition education program. The 6 phases included assessment of the need for education (literature review), establishment of educational objectives and direction of development of the program, validity check by professionals, instruction design and development of media, design and implementation of progress evaluation, and revision of program.

Result: This program consisted of texts, cartoons, photographs, discussion, animation, demonstrations, compensation and reinforcement that were directed by the Dick and Carey model. The subjects of this program included equal food intake, the role of food for health, appropriate amount of food intake, and healthy food intake habits.

Conclusion: This program includes various instruction techniques and advanced instructional media like games and real-time animation. This program will be effective to promote proper intake of nutrients and to maintain healthy eating habits for toddler. This program is recommended for wide use not only in day care centers, but also in clinical settings for young client's health promotion and good nutritional activities.
