The conceptual framework for the BSN nursing program utilizes a transformational orientation involving praxis, empowerment and innovation for a collective purpose. This presentation will elaborate on the concepts of praxis and empowerment and operationalize them through an assignment in a practicum course using on-line professional narratives.
Teaching/learning needs have changed since the days of "sage on the stage". Today’s students demand innovative teaching methods and strategies that empower them to achieve learning outcomes. One such method is the use of narratives, or stories. Stories can give students an opportunity to understand the values, beliefs and theories embedded in real-life clinical situations. The story sets up images for the students that are more memorable than lists of signs and symptoms or a lecture. Stories enable the storytellers to share, validate and shape their own clinical learning. The story audience can use the story to apply course concepts, nursing research and standards to a real practicum experience.
Guidelines for telling stories will be shared. Findings from storytelling in a traditional classroom will be compared to findings after converting this traditional assignment into a web-deliverable product via a partnership with instructional technology services. Steps required to make this conversion will be outlined as well.
Exerpts of student stories will be shared, along with actual discussion forum comments illustrating the students' application of classroom concepts. Overall student, faculty, and information technology service's evaluation of this project will be summarized.
