This presentation will describe the development and use of a computerized assessment system to track and measure change in student knowledge and skills over time. Components of this system include a method of tracking student theory exam and assignment grades, a computerized version of a clinical evaluation tool, a method of tracking completion of designated skills, and a skills evaluation form used to give immediate feedback to students. Participants will learn how to develop and use this type of system on both a desktop computer and a handheld computer that the faculty member can carry to clinical in a lab coat pocket. Two nursing faculty members developed this system with technical assistance from persons with expertise in Microsoft Excel and in instructional design. Six faculty members have used the system in a medical-surgical clinical nursing course for 3 semesters with approximately 70 students per semester. Evaluative data has been collected from the faculty members by report and from the involved students by written survey.
