To further facilitate the development of iterative reasoning skills necessary for contemporary nursing practice, the Outcome-Present State Test Model (OPT) developed by Pesut and Herman and the Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) and the Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) developed at the University of Iowa was integrated into a sophomore level medical-surgical clinical experience.
By using the OPT Model as a framework for the didactic and clinical experiences, these beginning students developed an ability to manage and interpret health/illness data and evaluate the outcomes of nursing interventions. A variety of thinking and reasoning skills were used within this model, enabling students to develop their ability in clinical reasoning, an evolutionary step beyond critical thinking.
The clinical reasoning web developed by Pesut and Herman was modified, integrating NIC and NOC to help students identify desired outcomes first and then to identify the nursing interventions necessary to achieve the outcome pre-determined jointly by the student and the client. This approach also assisted students in developing beginning prioritization and assessment skills that were client specific.
In this session, the presenter will share how the modified web was used, with examples of students decision making and progress toward clinical reasoning.
