| Learning Objective #2: Discuss how new case study formats can enhance learning for nurse practitioner students |
Problem based learning is a methodology that is being increasingly utilized to assist students in the development of their critical thinking skills. This method traditionally uses case ‘scenarios’ accompanied by a series of questions to direct the students’ analysis of the ‘clues’. The student then must synthesize the information given, draw upon previous course work and their own clinical experience, to produce a likely diagnosis and treatment plan.
The University at Buffalo Family Nurse Practitioner Program utilizesseshas developed several unique variations on the traditional case scenario: a ‘progressive’ case study, an on-line chat format, and a group case study. The progressive case study involves ‘uncovering’ the information in various stages. The on-line chat, via the BlackBoard© course management system, involves an interactive interview of the patient by the nurse practitioner student groups with the clinical instructor serving as the patient and moderator. The group case study allows a small group of students to work on a case together, thus enhancing collegiality and promoting the team process.
These various approaches to clinical education appeal to the wide variety of adult learners. These formats have generated positive feedback from faculty, preceptors, and students in regards to the development of the students’ critical thinking skills. Specifically, this program will prepareacquaint the learner to design, implement, and evaluatedwith new case study techniques which will stimulate creative new learning approaches. The faculty will present an overview of the various case study formats. The program will discuss the design, implementation, and evaluation of these new teaching formats.
