Approximately 50% of the RN student body in this nursing program are Canadian, of whom over 2/3 have immigrated to Canada from the Philippines, India, China, Taiwan, British Commonwealth, Czech Republic, Poland, Caribbean nations, and Guyana. In order to attend the college, these students commute from the Toronto metropolitan area to the United States to attend classes. Based on these diverse backgrounds and geographical transportation needs, the faculty opted to present all web-based RN-BSN completion clinical nursing courses. Content in the first course (6 cr class, 2 cr clinical) includes five modules: informatics, nursing history, nursing theory, family dynamics, case management, and complementary and alternative therapies. The subsequent semester (6 cr class, 2 cr clinical) includes community health nursing, leadership, gerontology, and addictions nursing. Students complete one module at a time while performing clinical practice, which is substantiated via written portfolios. Administrative support was provided to faculty including inservice education on using Blackboard for distance learning.
The informatics module contains content on the use of the Internet for health information-gathering and worldwide research in the overall area of informatics. This module is necessary because it provides a knowledge base for students to assist them in completing the other web-based modules. The module was key to the entire web-based approach to distance learning due to the changing nature of technological health care. Evaluation of the informatics module has shown that it is well received and provides a flexible learning option for these multi-national nurses. Students found the informatics content to be stimulating due to the interactive nature of the module since students are sent to "surf" the Internet to gain their knowledge from a preliminary list of websites.
