This clinical session and oral presentation will explore the questions: Do nurses, through aesthetic knowing and personal experience become more effective nurses, helpers, and healers? Is it necessary to experience crisis to be more understanding and effective in our practices? Combining my interest in nursing, art, and integrated body psychotherapy, the presentation will show how my experiences as a public health nurse, art therapist, and artist influences how I work with clients.
My art work has hung in one person shows as well as juried shows, and is included in private and public collections such as the Registered Nurses Association of BC.
The presentation, using a collection of my artistic work will demonstrate artistic, creative, and professional practice. Topics will include birth, death, and surgery for a detached retina and most recently breast reduction surgery. These experiences are transformed into vibrant images.
Participants will come to know the creative process at work, feel its inspiration, and understand its use in a variety of ways and settings. Some of the client-centred imagery will focus on work with people who have communication difficulties. For example, my art therapy/nursing practice has included working with clients experiencing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, stroke, brain tumors, depression, and Down’s syndrome. The work with these clients centred on loss and grief issues. Other clients include childbearing families and their perceptions of pregnancy and birth.
The target audience for this presentation is anyone who has an interest in the creative process. By doing our own personal work, we are more effective holistic healers and nurses who can be more present and aware in our interactions with self and others. Participants will be able to engage, reflect personally and professionally, broaden their concepts of creativity, and appreciate how their life experiences provide a foundation and vehicle for their practice.
