Creating a Patient Satisfaction Intervention

Elaine A. Yellen, RN, PhD, School of Nursing and Health Sciences, School of Nursing and Health Sciences, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Corpus Christi, TX, USA
Learning Objective #1: Describe five key elements influencing patient satisfaction
Learning Objective #2: Identify the process of creating an innovative project to improve patient satisfaction

The process of creating an innovative Spanish/English video to promote patient satisfaction will be presented. Five key elements to enhance patient satisfaction were incorporated into the video based on literature review and a 2001 descriptive study. The significance of promoting patient satisfaction in nursing practice is a priority from within the profession and from health care accrediting and marketing entities. In response to requirements of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare organizations, hospitals are evaluating health care by the collection of outcome data including patient satisfaction. The ANA focuses on patient satisfaction with overall care and patient satisfaction with nursing care as two nurse-sensitive patient outcomes. Nursing is a key determinant of overall patient satisfaction during a hospital admission. Nurses are under immense administrative and financial pressure to improve patient satisfaction in their hospital units. The objective of creating a preoperative video for use in the OPSU with the staff nurses as actors is to increase patient satisfaction by patient education. A byproduct of having the nurses perform in the video may be an increase in nurse satisfaction. The video was created through a funded grant project between the university and the public broadcasting station. The expectation of the nursing faculty was to write two video segments about any topic useful for education. The first video in the series presented the 2001 descriptive study findings. The steps of creating the second video, research and writing the content, coordinating with technical broadcasting people, the hospital staff and administrators will be described in the presentation. The video will be shown during the presentation.
