Creating Interactive Learning Environments for Net Generation Nursing Students

Anne Marie Krouse, PhD, RN and Lynne C. Borucki, PhD, CRNP. Nursing, Widener University, Chester, PA, USA
Learning Objective #1: Discuss the importance of providing multiple strategies for learning for today's nursing student
Learning Objective #2: Identify strategies to utilize in a Web-enhanced format to support the learning of today's nursing student

With nursing shortages at critical levels and nursing school enrollments not able to keep pace with the growing need for nurses, nurse educators must find new methods of attracting and engaging nursing students. Traditional methods of teaching fail to meet the expectations of Net Generation students. Interactive learning environments that focus on creativity, individual learning, enhanced discovery, critical thinking and self expression are essential for today's learners. Nasseh(1999)identified critical aspects of higher education institutions for the 21st century; student-centered and outcome centered education, global education, time and place-independent education, interactive multimedia resources and adaptive educational resources. To meet the demands of both the nursing profession and the nursing students of the 21st century, nurse educators must utilize strategies that create an interactive learning environment. We have developed and will discuss diverse classroom and web-based methodologies such as on-line discussion threading, case studies, and gaming that we have used to successfully create an interactive learning environment.
