Learning Objective #1: Identify the benefits of using school settings to strengthen health promotion and protection | |||
Learning Objective #2: Examine the community building competencies learned by student nurses |
In spring 2002 the county commissioners eliminated fuding for a VNA school health program. This decision affected over 60 private, parochial, and public schools. Schools were left with the challenge of how to provide mandated services with little to no funding. Faculty at the school of nursing seized this opportunity to establish partnerships with several schools to provide a variety of services including: state mandated screenings; immunization status reports;mandatory staff education; and health education needs identified by students and teachers. This partnership provided the student nurses with: "hands-on" experience in performing health screenings;analyzing child health data in relation to normal growth and development parameters; identifying care management strategies assuring that mandated requirements were met;providing necessary follow-up; and planning and implementing health education programs for children grades K-8. This partnership will be the basis for a state grant. The partnerships have served to provide "real-life" experiences for student nurses in several curriculum areas and has provided a much needed commuity service to our schools.
